Abstract

This study examined career motivation and attitude as determinants of job commitment of library personnel in selected university libraries in Ogun State, Nigeria. The study adopted survey of correlational type as the method. Five selected universities with a sampled population of one hundred and four using total enumeration of all professionals and paraprofessionals participated in the study. Four objectives, three research questions and one hypothesis were raised. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used and percentages, means, standard deviation and Pearson product moment correlation were used to present results. Findings revealed amongst others that: the level of career motivation of library personnel is high with a weighted mean of (𝒙􀴥= 3.38); there is a positive career attitude of library personnel with a weighted mean of (𝒙􀴥= 3.10); there is a moderate level of job commitment of library personnel with a weighted mean of (𝒙􀴥= 2.76) and a significant combined effect of the independent variables (career motivation and attitude) to the prediction of job commitment of library personnel. The result yielded a coefficient of multiple regressions R of .256, multiple R-square = .066 and Adjusted R square =.045. Paper concludes that a high career motivation and a positive career attitude will improve job commitment of the library personnel. Two of the recommendations include the need for very strong support and collaboration of the management with the library personnel to increase their level of job commitment; management should also support library personnel job commitment by supplying the essential facilities that can make the library more functional and so on.
