Curbing the Menace of Corruption in Nigeria Immigration Service

Abstract

There are many factors in the paramilitary life that make it vulnerable to work-unethical behaviours and these intrinsic and extrinsic factors. The intrinsic factors are those inherent in the job such as guard-duty, lack of social support, organizational climate and structure, e.g. the physical environment of the job at times may not be convenient, and there is a lack of privacy, especially for those at border posts and lack of opportunity to participate in decision making. Some intense degree of frustration is associated with life in the Service The prevalence low usage of personnel skill and competencies could also trigger unethical behavior. Employees who are bored by lack of challenges or repetitive job duties that underutilizes their abilities can be motivated into unethical practices. Personnel of the Service as members of the society desire recognition, new experiences, job satisfaction and inability to fulfill this can give birth to tension. Dissatisfaction in life can be said to be significant risk factor for unethical behavior at work for personnel of any organization. Corruption undermines relationship between the personnel and the various users of the Immigration facilities. It destroys the pride of the Service and also undermines the professionalism. It makes authority ineffective. Corruption erodes the rule of law, harms the reputation of and trust in the Service. Reputation of dishonesty damages credibility. Nothing can tarnish the reputation, image and morale of an organization as quickly as corruption. The aim of this paper is to discuss nature of corruption in Nigeria and Nigerian immigration. Service. It also aims at providing more insight on the concept of corruption so as to reorient the employees towards better attitudes against corruption. It discussed what can be put in place in curbing the menace of the epidemic in the service.
