Effective and Healthy Parenting in Mitigating Childhood trauma

Abstract

Family as a child's first contact is saddled with many supportive mechanisms for every child's well-being, whereby both pleasant and unpleasant experiences are intertwined and may leave the children unbalanced for the rest of their lives. However, every child's unpleasant experiences outlive one developmental stage to another, forming the basis of such a child's behaviour pattern resulting in abnormal emotional outbursts, aggressive behaviour, withdrawal, and more serious problem in school. Parents and caregivers may be the first threat to a childhood traumatic experience due to their unhealthy and maladaptive behaviours. Therefore, unhealthy parenting makes a child more prone to trauma. It implies that parents should learn to manage their differences before their children and acquire knowledge and skills to play effective counsellor roles.
