Effects of Some Socio-Psychological Factors on Quality of Life of Secondary School Students

Abstract

In recent times, it has been observed that unhealthy life style has become the order of the day among secondary school students. Thus, many of these students get involved in different self-destructive antisocial behaviors such as gambling, armed robbery, prostitution and other indecent behaviours. Therefore, this study determined the predictive impact of peace education, emotional intelligence and socioeconomic status on quality of life of secondary school students in Owerri Municipal Council of Imo state Nigeria. The study adopted the descriptive survey research design of correlational type. Three hundred secondary school students were randomly selected from five secondary schools in the study area. Four instruments were used to collect data for the study. A single-administration and Cronbach Alpha ensured the reliability of the instruments. The data collected were analyzed using multiple regression analysis and Pearson product-moment correlation with the aid of Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) version 20. The result of the study revealed that emotional intelligence, peace education and socio-economic status related positively and significantly with quality of life of students and these socio-psychological variables jointly accounted for about 66.5% of the variance observed in quality of life of students. Base on this it is recommended that secondary school students should be given emotional intelligence training and peace education guided by sound socioeconomic background, so as to stimulate positive quality of life among the students.
