Factors Influencing Substance Abuse Among Commercial Drivers In Saki West Local Government, Oyo State

Abstract

This study examines factors influencing substance abuse among commercial drivers in Saki West Local Government, Oyo State. The study was based on a descriptive design also known as a survey. The population of the study comprised bus drivers randomly selected from 3 major parks in Saki West local government area of Oyo State within the age range of 20 years and 36. The research used 3 motor parts in Saki in which each of the parks, and a simple random technique was used to select the participants. 147 drivers were selected to participate in the study, four research questions were answered. The instrument used was a structured questionnaire on technological factors social and economic factors affecting substance use among the drivers. The results showed that the correlation coefficient between social factors and alcohol and drug abuse among commercial drivers is r = 0.304 and p <0.05. There was a positive correlation coefficient between environmental factors and alcohol and drug abuse among commercial drivers. There were positive relationships between economic factors, technological factors, and alcohol and drug abuse among commercial drivers. It was suggested that the government and other non – governmental groups should join hands together in mounting guidance and counselling programmes in motor parks to dissuade drivers from substance abuse and to create awareness on the implications of drug use.
