This paper examines the responses to the challenges of the pandemic and their effects on language teacher education of the future. The study used an online survey sent to language teachers in Ibadan via social media and raised two research questions. A hundred and three (103) language teachers responded to the online survey. The responses were content-analysed in response to the two research questions formulated. Many of the challenges perceived by teachers revolve around the hampering of the effective teaching and assessment of the four basic skills of language – listening, speaking, reading and writing as well as the inadequacies of the virtual teaching and learning to handle the peculiarities of language instruction. The teachers recommended a rethink of the language education curriculum and training and retraining of in-service language teachers to meet the challenges.
