Job Dissatisfaction and Poor Psychological Well-being as Predictors of Workplace Incivility among Public Service Employees in Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study examined Job Dissatisfaction and Poor psychological Well-being as Predictor of Workplace Incivility among Public Service Employees in Oyo State. A descriptive survey design was adopted for the study while a convenient sampling technique was used to select two hundred and forty-six participants from the Public service in Oyo State. A validated, self-constructed questionnaire was the main instrument used to gathered relevant data. Two research questions were formulated for the study while Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and regression analysis were used to analyse the data. Findings revealed correlation between Job Dissatisfaction and Workplace Incivility (0.578**) and Poor psychological Well-being and Workplace Incivility (0.610**) at 0.05 significant respectively. Furthermore, linear combination of Job Dissatisfaction and Poor psychological Well-being jointly predict workplace incivility among public service employees (F (2; 243) = 34.201; R = .469, R2 = .220; P < .05) while regression model revealed that independent variables of Job Dissatisfaction (β = -0.432, t = - 2.813, p < 0.05) and Poor psychological Well-being (β = 0.483, t =3.146, p < 0.05) relatively contributed to Workplace incivility among public service employees. Based on these findings, it was recommended that organizations should formulate and implement anti-incivility policies in the workplace. Industrial Social Workers and human resources managers should create awareness to educate employees on the negative effect of incivility.
