Knowledge and Attitude towards Uptake of Prostate Cancer Screening among Male College of Education Students in Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

Prostate cancer is one of many preventable health challenges that threaten men’s physical, mental and psychological wellbeing. Reports, however, have shown that many people particularly male college students who are future change agents are unwilling to go for screening, for the fear of a negative outcome. Previous studies focused largely on the prevalence and causes of prostate cancer with little consideration for male college students. This study investigated knowledge and attitude towards uptake of prostate cancer screening among male college of education students in Oyo State. The multistage sampling procedure was used to select 200 male students that cut across the schools in the college of education. Data were collected using questionnaire; Knowledge of PCS (KPCS-r=0.78), and Attitude towards PCS (APCS-r= 0.81). Two research questions were provided answers to. The finding revealed that there was a low level of knowledge of uptake of prostate cancer screening among the respondents. The finding also revealed that the attitude towards uptake of prostate cancer screening among the respondents was negative. It was recommended that health education programmes in which awareness and knowledge of uptake of prostate cancer screening will feature prominently should be put in place in colleges of education in the country.
