Nexus between Socio-Familial Support and Psychological Well-Being of the Aged in Oyo State

Abstract

The population of elderly in Nigeria is on the increase connoting the need for support for this class of people. Social support provided by family, friends and neighbours has been essential for the survival and wellbeing of older people in Nigeria. This study examined the relationship between socio-familial support and the psychological well-being of aged in Akinyele Local Government, Ibadan, Oyo State. The study adopted descriptive survey research design. The sample of the study consisted of 250 aged persons in Akinyele Local Government Area. A self-constructed was used to collect relevant data. Two research hypotheses were formulated while Person Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) was used to analyze the data. Findings revealed that there is a significant relationship between psychological wellbeing and social support of the aged, r = 0.927, and also, there is a significant relationship between psychological wellbeing and family support of the aged, r = 0.934. The variables independently and significantly predicted psychological well-being of aged in Akinyele Local Government. Based on the findings, the study recommended that family members and the society should show love and affection to the aged.
