Parental Involvement and Attitude towards School of In-School Adolescents in the Ilorin Metropolis

Abstract

The academic performance of students and the social standard will improve if parents actively promote a positive school attitude among their children. This study investigated parental involvement and attitude towards school of In-school adolescents in Ilorin metropolis. A survey method was used. This survey included all adolescents enrolled in school in the Ilorin metropolitan area, and 200 respondents were chosen at random. The "Parental Involvement and Attitude Towards Schooling Questionnaire" (PIASQ) was used to collect data. Class, gender, and parental education functioned as moderating factors. Three null hypotheses were analyzed with Pearson's Product Moment Correlation (PPMC), whereas research questions were answered with percentage, mean, and rank order. The findings of the study indicated that parental involvement in the education of adolescents in school was high, as respondents attested that their parents paid close attention to their children's academic progress, paid their school fees on a regular basis, and advised them on their career choices. The findings also revealed that in-school adolescents have a positive attitude toward schooling, as they routinely attend school and class and do not depart before closing time or the end of the lesson period. In the metropolitan area of Ilorin, there was also a significant correlation between parental involvement and adolescents' attitudes toward schooling. Also, a substantial positive relationship was observed based on gender; a positive relationship was discovered between senior secondary school students and respondents whose parents are college graduates. However, no significant relationship was found with students whose parents are not educated. Based on the findings of this study, it is recommended that parents be encouraged to examine their children in school. There is also a need for the establishment of adult education in a variety of communities in order to enhance parents' literacy and foster a positive attitude towards education among students.
