Patterns of Stress and Academic Commitment among Married Open Distance Learners of University of Lagos, Nigeria

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to assess the associations between selected stress patterns in predicting academic commitment among Open Distance Learning (ODL) student in University of Lagos. The descriptive survey research design was used. Purposive sampling technique was engaged in selecting 213 married participants (96 males and 117 females) from the five programmes in the Distance Learning Institute of the university. In measuring the variables two validated instruments were used in collecting data (Stress Pattern and Academic commitment Scales). Collected data was analysed using Pearson product-moment correlation and Multiple Regression. The result revealed that all the independent variables jointly contributed to the prediction of ² 199), with financial stress been the most potent factor (β=.184, t= 6.168). The implication of the findings was drawn and discussed.
