Predictive Influence Of Anxiety, Self-Esteem And Depression On Perceived Family Stigmatisation Of Clients With Substance Abuse Record In Ife North Local Government Area Of Osun State

Abstract

This study examined the predictive influence of anxiety, self-esteem and depression on perceived family stigmatisation of clients with substance abuse record in Ife North Local Government Area of Osun State. A descriptive survey method was used, while purposive sampling technique was used to obtain the sample, the entire population of clients in the rehabilitating centre was adopted in order to minimize bias. The participants consist of 44 males and 32 females, while 24 of them were Christians, 52 were Muslims and others did not indicate their religion. Structured questionnaire was used to obtained relevant data. The data were analyzed using the Pearson Product Moment Correlation (PPMC) and multiple linear regression analysis. Findings revealed that there is a positive and strong relationship (0.184) between family self-esteem and perceived family stigmatisation. Also, there is a significant positive correlation between family anxiety and perceived family stigmatisation (0.339). A significant relationship exist between family depression and perceived stigmatisation of family members of clients with substance abuse. There was a significant joint contribution of the independent variables to the prediction of family stigmatisation of clients with substance abuse. The result yielded a co-efficient of multiple regression: R= .524, Multiple R square = .274 and Adjusted R square = .244. It was recommended that planning and co-ordinations for healthcare service relating to addiction services should be integrated and decentralized to provide patients with accessible health care.
