Quality and Unemployment Issues in Curriculum and Graduate Outputs of Nigerian Universities

Abstract

Many reasons have been advanced and various steps have been taken to address unemployment in Nigeria most especially at this period when unemployment rate is fast approaching 50% (in particular 38%). Issues of unemployment in Nigeria specifically among graduates have been widely researched. In most cases blames are always laid on the low level of job creation in the country, skills mismatched between what was learnt in the university and what is expected in the labour market and the lack of entrepreneurial attitude among the graduates. The issues inherent in curriculum development and implementation were often glossed over by most researchers. Paucity of literature around what constitute curriculum development and implementation in the past when unemployment, functionality and self-reliant was not an issue geared this study to looked at what create impetus for curriculum development in different eras in Nigeria and how it was implemented in order to gain insight into tips for resolving contemporary issues inherent in the curriculum development and implementation in Nigerian higher institutions. Connoisseurship approach which emphasis multidimensional concept of quality and impact of curriculum designers, implementers and the beneficiaries on the output of university system was fostered by this article as an in-built measure to ensure quality of university graduate outputs and lessen the problem of unemployment in Nigeria.
