Teachers’ preferences and perception of effectiveness of teaching methods on secondary schools students’ academic performance in Lagos state

Abstract

This study examined preferences of teaching methods and their perceived impacts by secondary school teachers on students’ performance in Lagos State. The study adopted a descriptive survey research design. Questionnaire was used as the instrument for data collection. A sample size of fifty (50) teachers was selected for the study from the population of 250 within the education 11 District in Lagos state. The data collected was analyzed using mean. The findings revealed that the prevalent teaching methods adopted by most teachers are discussion method, questioning method, demonstration method, peer tutoring method and field trip/excursion method. These teaching methods enabled the students to explore problem solving strategies and also develop the psychomotor skills of the students. It is therefore, recommended that teachers should ensure they are familiar with appropriate teaching methods to use in teaching students.
