The relative influence of psycho-demographic factors on perceived psychological well-being of adolescents with hearing impairment in Southwest Nigeria

Abstract

This study, investigated some psycho-demographic variables on the perceived psychological wellbeing of hearing-impaired adolescents in south-west Nigeria. The study adopted survey research design of ex-post facto type. Purposive sampling was used to select eight Senior Secondary Schools and 491 adolescents with hearing impairment using a battery-operated audiometer. Data were analysed using multiple regression statistics. The relative contributions of the independent variables to the variance of perceived psychological well-being were in the following order of magnitude: locus of control (b =.291, t = 7.090, P<0.05); meaning of life (b =.186, t = 3.942, P<0.05); self-concept (b =.129, t = 2.643, P<0.05); self-efficacy (b =.116, t = 2.759, P<0.05); age (b =.054, t = 1.250, P<0.05); gender (b =.054, t = 1.241, P<0.05); socio-economic status (b = .045, t = 1.076, P<0.05) and emotional intelligence (b = .003, t = .065, P<0.05). Psychodemographic variables (locus of control, meaning of life, self-concept, self-efficacy, age and gender), influenced perceived psychological well-being of adolescents with hearing impairment. Service providers could, therefore, take into cognisance the relative influence of the variables when rendering professional help to adolescents with hearing impairment. Intervention programmes could also be designed on the factors to enhance the perceived psychological wellbeing of this category of adolescents.
