The Role of Guidance Counsellors In Promoting National Integration Among Youth in Oyo State, Nigeria

Abstract

The study examined the roles of guidance counsellors in promoting national integration among youth in Oyo State, Nigeria. The research design adopted for the study was the descriptive survey type. The purposive sampling technique was used to select 200 respondents for the study. Three research questions were answered in the study and two null hypotheses were tested at 0.05 level of significance. The study revealed that ethno-religious violence among others was the major factor militating against national integration. Also, encouraging inter-tribal marriages was one of the solutions to the problem of national integration among youth in Oyo state. The findings of the study showed that cognitive restructuring of clients was among the strategies in promoting national integration by guidance counsellors. The results showed that there were significant differences in the roles of guidance counsellors in promoting national integration in Oyo State based on religion and age. It was recommended that counselors in schools restructure the thought pattern of the upcoming youths by discouraging sectionalism, ethno-religious violence and disintegration in order to promote stability and sense of national integration.
