The Role of Pre-Primary Education in the Psychological Development of Children in Nigeria

Abstract

Pre-primary education has existed in many countries for many years, Nigeria inclusive. Such schools are known as kindergarten, nursery school, pre-school, “ Head Start” and other names. Some of these schools are owned by the government and others by individuals. Their aims are usually to socialize children into the life and activities of the society and to give them both nonformal and semi-formal education. The study was to find out if these pre-primary schools have been able to accomplish these noble objectives set by the Federal Government and for which they are established. It provides an overview of the importance of early childhood education. in providing young children with a safe, nurturing environment as well as the stimulation needed to prepare them for the transition to the early grades. The study adopted the Descriptive survey design approach and the data collected were analyzed using Simple Percentages, Mean and Standard Deviation. The findings revealed that the schools, to a great extent, are useful in the preparation of children for primary education and adult life. It is also important that society at large understand the importance of early childhood education and of establishing a sound educational foundation for the children of our country.
