This paper discusses the problems faced in the implementation of language policy in the Nigeria nursery and primary schools, which favors mother tongue-based learning. The paper observed that the National Policy on Nigerian Education has given official recognition to the use of language of the immediate as media of instruction at both pre-primary and lower primary stages of education. The paper also established that the implementation of the use of mother tongue is not in accordance with the stated policy. Issues raised are discussed under the following sub-headings: meaning of mother tongue, importance of mother tongue education in pre-school, language policy on pre-primary education, implementation of the policy, factors militating against policy implementation, conclusion and recommendations.
